UNITY: We're going to Las Vegas

The following is the e-mail UNITY sent out at 6:20 p.m. on September 8 announcing its next convention city.

NABJ had its 2007 convention in Las Vegas and it appears UNITY is loving Las Vegas too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UNITY Selects Mandalay Bay in Vegas for 2012 Convention

UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc. selected Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas as the host for its 2012 convention. The UNITY convention is scheduled for August 1-4, 2012.

The UNITY board of directors heard presentations from two other cities, Los Angeles and Houston, before selecting Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay property as the host site. Los Angeles was selected as the backup city. "All three venues presented exciting opportunities for UNITY especially during these uncertain times, we greatly appreciate the interest and effort put forth by Los Angeles and Houston," said UNITY President Rafael Olmeda, "we are pleased that MGM Mirage, the parent company of Mandalay Bay, is considered one of the leaders in diversity in a manner that is well aligned with our mission and goals."

"UNITY continues to seek cost-efficient opportunities for the convention while also maximizing participant experiences at all levels" said Onica N. Makwakwa, UNITY Executive Director. "Mandalay Bay offers UNITY the potential to house all attendees under one roof as well as to potentially host all convention events in one location. We anticipate that this will allow members of the alliance partners as well as recruiters and job seekers to maximize networking opportunities."

The most recent UNITY convention was held July 23 - 27, 2008 in Chicago drawing over 7,500 journalists of color and media executives. Other past UNITY conventions have been held in Atlanta in 1994, Seattle in 1999, and Washington, D.C. in 2004.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
The upcoming NABJ/UNITY convention schedule

2010: NABJ in San Diego from July 28-August 1
2011: NABJ in Philadelphia from August 3-August 7
2012: UNITY in Las Vegas from August 1-August 4
2013: NABJ in Orlando (TBA).
2014: NABJ in New Orleans (TBA).
2015: NABJ in Minneapolis (TBA).

Looking ahead to 2010 and 2011

Hopefully, I'll see as many NABJ members as possible at this year's convention in Tampa from August 5-9.

I'm excited to see Michael Wilbon get this year's lifetime achievement award.

I'm even more thrilled to see Leon Carter and Sandy Rosenbush get this year's legacy award. I was a 2000 graduate of the Sports Journalism Institute and I'm still grateful for that opportunity.

I'll also be celebrating a very special birthday in Tampa at the 4th annual NABJ Sports Task Force party. I was there for the first party in Indianapolis in 2006 and haven't missed one since.

As you can see, it has been a good year for sports people. Let's hope it continues on August 7.

However, I'm a little sad that A LOT of my good friends are not attending this year's convention in Tampa for many reasons. Some friends are unemployed. More friends are broke. Others just didn't like Tampa as a convention city.

I can't fault anyone for how they choose to spend their money. I've been spending my own cash attending NABJ conventions since 2001. I only missed two conventions (2003 in Dallas and 2004-Unity in Washington, D.C.) and it was only because I got new jobs just before the convention those years. I felt guilty asking for time off in 2003 and 2004. Otherwise, I've made it my mission (five years and counting) to attend NABJ or Unity each year...even if it puts me in the red.

So, anyone that isn't coming to Tampa this year, I hope you will give strong consideration to the 2010 convention in San Diego (July 28 - August 1) and to the 2011 convention in Philadelphia (August 3 - August 7).

Giving back to the next generation

(the 2009 class of NEHSJC)

I recently took some time off the campaign trail to go back to my home state of Massachusetts.

I was the keynote speaker for the New England High School Journalism Collaborative (NEHSJC) on Tuesday, June 30. The ceremony was held at Regis College in Weston, Mass.

In 1996, when I was a bright-eyed, bushy-head high school junior at Brockton High, I participated in what was then the UMASS-Boston High School Journalism workshop. The program grew and was later renamed as the New England High School Journalism Collaborative. Even with a name change, the NEHSJC has one constant characteristic and that is the leadership of Carole Remick, the program's director.

(myself and Carole Remick)

Founded in 1987 the New England High School Journalism Collaborative (NEHSJC) is a non-profit organization that provides educational opportunities to high school students wishing to improve their writing skills and learn journalism techniques from professional writers. In collaboration with the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, Regis College, the University of Massachusetts-Boston, Partners in Print, and professional journalists, the NEHSJC is able to offer an annual summer workshop, free of charge, to qualified high school students. The week long workshop provides an opportunity for these students to improve their writing and learn journalism techniques.

Since 1987, Remick has directed the program and when she asked me to come back and speak to the high school students...I immediately said "Yes" forgetting for a second that I was 1) on vacation and 2) I had planned to make a couple of NABJ campaign stops on the East Coast.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for the work Remick has done and I don't know if I can ever repay her for accepting me into the program in 1996. Nevertheless, I couldn't change my RSVP to Remick. I have always been a man of word...so for this one time vacation, NABJ and the NABJ Elections had to wait. I took a 4-hour bus ride from the Port Authority in New York City to South Station in Boston, Mass. I then had my best friend pick me up and bring me to my mother's house in Brockton, Mass. I then drove my mother's car to Weston, Mass. So, after 6 hours and 30 minutes on the road, I finally reached my destination.

I told Remick I would do it all over again...all she has to do is ask me.

Tips For 1st Time Convention Attendee - Part 2

There was more from Dr. Ritchie....so I had to break it up in two e-mails...

-Sherlon Christie

--------------------------------------------------------------------
In response to a student's question about advice specifically for
students attending conventions for the first time, here's some advice:

1. Post questions about the convention on the NABJ students and Young Black Journalists listserves. This also is a great way of meeting members and getting mentors.

2. In terms of preparing for the convention, spend much more time
reading the trades ("Editor & Publisher," etc.), keeping up with current
events, editing your cover letter and making good copies of your clips than
you spend time worrying about your wardrobe. Unfortunately, most students
put off until the last minute the most difficult part: clips, resume,
cover letter. It takes hours to put together a good clip package, so plan
ahead. If you don't, you'll be hanging out at Kinkos until the wee hours the
night before convention, and you'll arrive looking hung over.

I see many, many students who have spent so much time and effort
on clothes, but have paid little attention to what is in their heads and
in their clip packages. While you want to be dressed appropriately, that
doesn't mean that you need to bring 8 expensive outfits nor does it
mean you need to buy new clothes. Just look professional. Really no one cares
about how many outfits you bring. They really care about what you've done
and what work you've brought with you to show. A person can get by fine with
bringing one or two suits and a few tops (shirts) and scarves (or ties) to go
with them.

3. When you meet people at convention, quickly let them know that
you're a first timer. That's a great ice breaker, and is a nice way to get all
sorts of advice and mentoring.

4. No matter how scared you get at convention, do not hide out in
your room. If you need a break, take a walk or go exercise at the fitness
facility. The more you circulate, the more opportunity you'll have to meet
people and to get info.

5. If you're flying in, look for brothers and sisters on the plane
who are carrying NABJ shoulder bags. Start a conversation by asking if
they're going to NABJ. You also may be able to share a taxi ride or you should sit next to them on the shuttle bus ride, which, too, can be a great way of getting to know someone.

6. If you're attending a meal or are at a workshop and you have an
empty seat next to you and you see someone of any age who's wandering
around as if they don't know where to sit, invite them to sit next to you. This,
too, is a great way of meeting people.

--Louise Ritchie

Tips For 1st Time Convention Attendee - Part 1

I had to dig in my e-mail archives a bit for this...but I'm sure someone out there will find these tips useful.

As always many thanks once to the NABJ student representative for diligently answering my question back in 2001 (by way of Dr. Louise Ritchie) and to Bob Butler, president of the Bay Area Association of Black Journalists, for his recent additions to the list.

Sherlon Christie
Sports Reporter
Asbury Park Press (N.J.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Pasted below is an email Dr. Louise Ritchie, former SEED chair for
NABJ sent to the NABJforum listserve when asked about
convention do's and don'ts. These tips are very valuable and they should help
you, Sherlon, to get the most out of the convention.

DO:

1. Have a positive attitude. You never know if the person to whom
you're complaining about the lousy food is not only the NABJ member
who spent hours of free time helping to plan the convention, but also is
a recruiter on the lookout for an entry-level hire or intern.

2. Be gregarious. Some good conversation openers include saying
things such as "Have you been to other NABJ conventions? (A good
follow-up to a "yes" could be to ask the person's advice about how you can get
the most out of this one. Another good follow-up would be to ask what
other conventions the person has attended, and what s/he enjoyed about
them.)

3. Dress in a way that you stand out in a positive way. Wearing a
bright color as a colorful scarf, tie or blouse can help people
remember meeting you. Just don't carry it to extremes such as deciding to wear
a red and orange checkered suit!

4. Attend the workshops and when you go, sit up front and ask some
questions. When you ask questions, stand up and say your name and
your school. Students have been known to get job offers and
internship offers by asking questions or making thoughtful comments at workshops.

5. Talk to everyone. This includes talking to attendees who may be
several decades older than you. Instead of clustering with your
classmates at meals, make a point of sitting with people whom you don't know. When
you select the table, after getting a seat, walk around the table, shake
everyone's hand, and introduce yourself to them.

Also know that many people -- including veteran journalists -- are shy (It's amazing how many journalists are tigers when they're pursuing stories, but in their personal lives they are quiet and shy!), so are very happy when you take time to reach out to them. Some people who especially
may be appreciative are families of attendees and recruiters who are not black and who may not have had previous experience attending a gathering in which they are the racial minority. You also can get some valuable tips and information from such people, including members' families, who often have lots of inside knowledge about the field and may even have journalism
experience, too.

6. Understand that the type of attention you want to attract is attention based on your looking professional. Deep cleavage, skirts that virtually expose your underwear, T-shirts celebrating booze, sex or drugs etc., definitely will attract attention, but unless you're at the convention looking for quick sex or a reputation as a pushover or sleaze, leave that attire at home. Don't even wear such attire to the convention parties. Also remember that even parties at conventions are professional situations. Have fun, but have fun without telling the intimate
secrets of your life or without becoming an intimate secret in someone else's life!

7. Seek out opportunities to get feedback, and then listen when you get the feedback. Ask recruiters and veterans to critique your work. When they do so, do not get into an argument with them. If you don't agree with their assessment, then you don't have to follow their advice. But if you start arguing with them, you will get a reputation as a person who is
not interested in learning, and that can prevent your obtaining an entry level job or internship. People who are hired as entry level employees and interns are expected to grow and learn as part of the job. For that reason, many employers will choose a student who is eager to learn over a more experienced student who is a know it all.

8. Be up on your current events. This includes having read the day's newspaper (which typically will be available at the convention). Another good tip is to listen to the local National Public Radio station news in the morning when you wake up as virtually all professional journalists
(and many professionals in other fields) start their day listening to Morning Edition, which is widely regarded as the best broadcast news available.

Also, before the convention, read the trade publications such as American Journalism Review and Editor and Publisher. The more familiar you are with current events and challenges facing the field, the more you'll be able to join in with conversations with professionals.

9. In interviews, make sure that you highlight the excellent things you've done in journalism. Explain how you got the reticient source to talk. Describe how you did a tough story on a tight deadline while you also were editing copy. Don't wait for the interviewer to directly ask
you about these things. The recruiter cannot read your mind. In addition, an interview is not a modesty test. You easily can highlight your strengths by, when you are showing your clips, also telling the story behind your clips. "When my editor assign me this story, he said that he chose
me because I handled deadlines better than did the other interns. I got the story
at 7 and by 9, my editor had this story. "

10. Prepare packets of your resume, cover letter and clips. Put them in separate envelopes to give to recruiters. That way, when the recruiter packs the stacks of resumes and clips s/he has received and piles them into a suitcase, yours won't become wrinkled.

11. Send follow-up notes. These should be impeccable in terms of
spelling and grammar. They also should contain additional info about
you that you may not have had time to discuss during your interview.

DON'T

1. Huddle with your classmates like a sheep. Among the no-nos are sitting only with other students or your friends from school or waiting for your roommate to get up the morning so that you can go to the convention together.

2. Get up and leave if you realize that you've sat at a table with veterans or recruiters. Often such people are very happy to meet aspiring young journalists, and are really insulted if you jump up and abandon them. This particularly may be true with recruiters who literally are there to connect with potential hires such as yourself.

3. Be on the prowl for a date.

4. Avoid the workshops.

5. Sit in the back of the room at workshops. The days of back of the
bus are long over.

6. Go on the prowl for free drinks and free meals.

7. Spend your time telling recruiters what they can do for you. Spend
your time telling and showing recruiters what you can do for them.

8. Tell a recruiter that you have no clips because the people in your
student media were mean or cliquish. Recruiters know that if you
couldn't make it at your campus media, you definitely aren't ready
for the outside world. While the recruiter may nod his or head
sympathetically, that person is mentally crossing you off their list of good candidates.

9. Decide that the job fair is a waste of time because recruiters say
they have no open jobs now or they have no internships available for
this summer. Typically, summers are when there is turnover on jobs, so
recruiters now are taking applications for openings that are expected
later. If you blow off the interview or stop interviewing, what can happen is
that when the jobs open up, your name isn't in the pool. Even if you're
looking for an internship this summer, it can be important to interview
because while most internships already have been filled, often there are last
minute openings, and the students whom the recruiters know are available are
the ones contacted.

10. Run around loudly telling your friends and associates how "mean"
certain recruiters were. This is a small business. The new friend
whom you're sharing this information with may end up being the recruiter's spouse
or best friend.

This is excellent information. As one news director told me, "I can
shake a tree and 12 reporters and anchors will fall out. But a good
producer is as hard to find."

Some other tips: Bring PLENTY of resumes and business cards, if you
have them. Make sure your resume is ONE PAGE. The employee doesn't need to
know all the details of every job you've had. If it's not related to journalism
just put down what it was. Example: Taco Bell, June 2002 to September
2003.
Oh, and make sure your name is in LARGE TYPE AND BOLD FACE. When I'm
trying to find your resume, I may not look too hard. So make it easy for me
to find you.

Endorsements

Updated 5:20 p.m. July 1
(myself and Gregory Lee, senior assistant sports editor for the Boston Globe and current NABJ Treasurer)
What Greg has said about me:

"Sherlon Christie is a sports reporter for the Asbury Park Press and has been actively running for the office, reaching out to the NABJ membership with his blog, Facebook page, online live chats and appearances at association events. In his platform, he has two planks that especially appeal to me and should to the rest of the NABJ membership. First, he is emphasizing the importance of new media, with the goal to encourage all members to get up to speed with those skills, since that is the future of journalism. Second, he has committed to continue with Childress's efforts to be more open and offer regular information updates to the NABJ membership. We all know Sherlon better for his steady leadership and growth of the YBJ listserve."

(Gary Anthony Ramsey, president, CEO and founder for Great Pitch Media and current NABJ Region 1 Director)

What Gary has said about me:

"Over the last few months since he announced his intention to run for NABJ Secretary, Sherlon has conferred with the past three NABJ secretaries and has executed due diligence in preparing for an office that determines how NABJ is remembered and determines precedent for future administrations. Furthermore, Sherlon has the time to give to this office."

(myself and Corey Dade, reporter for the Wall Street Journal)

What Corey has said about me:

“I’ve watched Sherlon mature since college into a conscientious journalist and dedicated NABJ soldier. What we can appreciate most is how he approaches service. Sherlon, to borrow a metaphor from his sports world, plays ‘small ball.’ Time after time, he’s pushed through thankless, difficult spade work to help NABJ’s task forces and chapters better serve us. His attention to detail will keep NABJ operations on track. He has the experience of working effectively with the board’s big personalities while staying engaged with ‘regular’ members. We need the consummate worker, and not merely a networker. For NABJ Secretary, Sherlon gets the job done.”

Other key supporters include:

Robin Washington, News Director for the Duluth (Minn) News Tribune and former NABJ Parliamentarian.

Hollis Towns, Executive Editor and Vice President for News for the Asbury Park Press (N.J.).

Karvis Jones, Production Assistant for Fox Sports South (Atlanta).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greg, Gary, Corey, Robin, Hollis and Karvis are just some of my biggest supporters in my quest to be NABJ's next secretary.

To show your support for me, you can vote now at

Atlanta Chapter NABJ Candidates Forum

I've been told on several occasions that my personality fits that of a Southern gentleman. I consider this a big compliment considering that I've lived 86 percent of my life in the Northeast between three states (Massachusetts, New York and now New Jersey). The other 14 percent was spent as a baby in Jamaica.

Prior to Saturday, my only visit to Atlanta was for the 2005 NABJ Convention. I still have my 2005 NABJ convention bag (one of the few that my mother hasn't confiscated). I'm not sure why she's infatuated with my NABJ convention bags but she asks to see the new bag every year. Go figure. It is hard saying no to my mother but I've stood my ground and held onto the 30th anniversary convention bag.

Nevertheless, I went to Atlanta again on what appeared to be the hottest day of the year (98 degrees...and I'm not talking about the music group). I felt the heat the second I walked outside of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Of course, I had on a suit and tie, so it felt like 108 degrees to me. As I'm walking outside the airport, I thought back to the day I received the invitation to come to Atlanta. I said "yes" without hesitation and booked a flight a few days later without even knowing if I could get the day off. I work Saturdays and while it usually isn't a problem to switch around my schedule in the summer time, I had to eventually use a vacation day to make my appearance possible.

I felt it was well worth a vacation day to meet the members of the Atlanta chapter and visitors to the candidates forum. It was also good to see a wide range of ages in the auditorium and some familiar faces from the NABJ listserves. I had several goals by coming to Atlanta:

1) I hope I made a good impression on the Atlanta Chapter members because I know they vote.

2) I hope I showed that I really want to be the organization's next secretary via my platform.

3) I hope that I showed I have the time to make a serious commitment to the organization for the next two years.

4) Most importantly, I'm crossing my fingers on getting some votes from the 404 area code.

NABJ Candidates Forum in New York City

On May 30, I participated in the candidates' forum at the NABJ Region 1 Conference. Here's the youtube video of my opening statement and the question and answer portion. I'm on the left in the brown suit and beige tie.

Time to let your voice be heard!

The future of NABJ starts on Monday, June 8.

Yes. That's the first day you can vote online for the 2009 NABJ elections.

And yes. I'm asking that you cast your ballot for me as your next NABJ Secretary.

  • First, you want an NABJ secretary with detailed ideas on how to improve communication between the organization and its members.

  • Second, you want an NABJ secretary that has made time in his schedule to deal with the various issues affecting our members.

  • Third, you want an NABJ secretary that will be at board meetings taking detailed and accurate notes that make you feel as if you were at the meeting.

  • Lastly, you want an NABJ secretary that has your best interest in mind when he makes votes on the direction of the organization.

If you believe the aforementioned characteristics are vital for an NABJ Secretary, like I do, then I'm the person you want as the caretaker of this position from 2009-2011.

Vote online starting Monday, June 8.

Go to http://mynabj.org/

and you will need your NABJ membership ID number to vote. Your NABJ membership must be current in order to vote. If your membership has expired, you must renew it before July 1 in order to vote.

So, please renew your membership and please vote "Sherlon Christie for NABJ Secretary."

Thanks for your continued support and let's pull off one of the biggest upsets in the history of NABJ Elections.

Sincerely,
Sherlon Christie

Sunday Conversation: (Part 2.1)

If you missed the first chat, click right here.

NABJ Region 1 Conference (Recap)

After working till midnight and getting home at 1 a.m., I went to bed at 3 a.m. Saturday only to wake up at 6:30 a.m. to get ready for the NABJ Region 1 Conference.

On the bus ride to New York City, I went over my final preparations for the candidate's forum: I rehearsed my opening and closing statements, I went over my notes from reading the NABJ board minutes, I went over my mini schedule of what workshops I would attend and I put my cell phone on silent.

I arrived at CUNY's Graduate School of Journalism at 8:20 a.m. and picked up my badge and booklet. I sat down and had the continental breakfast while scanning the outstanding facility at CUNY. At 8:30 a.m., I moved into the newsroom to hear the welcome message from NABJ Region 1 Director Gary Anthony Ramsey. Former NABJ Region 1 Director, Caleb Wilkerson, who was responsible for the "Online Tools for Digital Journalists" idea, was not there but received an ovation for his hard work.

The Keynote speaker was Tim Peek, Senior Producer-Digital, NBC News. Peek gave a very impressive presentation on his view of digital journalism and what is NBC News' approach to digital journalism. After listening to Peek, I walked upstairs to participate in the "Final Cut Studio" presentation. I'm a Mac novice and I've only briefly used Final Cut Pro before so I was taking as many notes as I could. I'm learning how to shoot and edit video this summer through my job so I figured it wouldn' hurt to get a headstart.

After the "Final Cut Studio" I had lunch downstairs in the lobby before going back upstairs to the "Google for Journalists" presentation. I thought i knew everything there was to know about Google and I learned some new things. I would love the Google presenters to come to a future GSABJ chapter meeting/event to do their free presentation. I've recommended the idea to our chapter president.

After the "Google for Journalists" presentation, I walked back through the newsroom with the intention to get another bottle of water when I noticed NABJ Region II director Charles Robinson demonstrating his "Flip Video." Robinson said the device is available at my favorite store Best Buy for $150. I'm probably going to look into that soon. I didn't attend a workshop in the 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. time slot because I wanted to go over my notes one more time for the NABJ Candidates forum.

The main event of the NABJ Region 1 Conference was the NABJ Candidates Forum.

In attendance were:

Presidential Candidates: Kathy Times and Angelo Henderson

Vice-President for Print Candidates: Deirdre Childress and Rochelle Riley

Vice-President for Broadcast Candidates: Bob Butler and Dedrick Russell

Secretary Candidate: Sherlon Christie

Associate Representative Candidate: Aprill Turner

Region 1 Director Candidate: Katina Revels (was at the morning portion of the conference but couldn't attend the candidates forum because she had to work that night).

Region 2 Director Candidate: Charles Robinson

Student Representative Candidates: Lee Sandra Alexandre and Georgia Dawkins

The moderator was Herb Lowe. The timekeeper was Melanie Burney. The candidate statement reader was John Yearwood. Jeff Ballou read a statement for Secretary Candidate Roland Martin. Otherwise, Yearwood read statements from the following candidates: Andrew Humphrey (VP-Broadcast), Jacqualine Williams (Secretary), Benet Wilson (Region 2 Director), Hilary Golston (Region 4 Director) and Daniella Dorcelus (Student Representative).

Due to time restrictions there were no closing statements by any candidate. Each candidate was allowed an opening statement (or aforementioned prepared statement by Yearwood or designated proxy) and only candidates in attendance from contested races were allowed to answer questions. Moderator Lowe said the candidates forum was videotaped for the NABJ membership and would be transformed into a youtube video to be placed on the NABJ website at a later date.

After the candidate's forum, I walked to B. Smith's and had drinks with friends and then walked to the Bourbon Street Bar & Grille to have food with other friends. After that, I walked to the Port Authority and boarded the bus home to New Jersey. The 19-hour day in NYC ended when I closed my eyes at 1:15 a.m.

Friday, May 29, 2009

All day/evening/night in NYC on Saturday

I will be in New York City all day for the NABJ Region 1 Conference at CUNY's Graduate School of Journalism (219 W. 40th Street, New York, NY 10018) on Saturday, May 30.

The NABJ Region 1 Conference starts at 8 a.m. and concludes at 4:45 p.m.

The NABJ Candidates forum starts at 5 p.m. and goes till 6:30 p.m. I'll also hang around in New York City after the candidates forum. If you need to reach me, text me at the number on the right of the blog.

Monday, May 25, 2009

My Platform

I wanted to show NABJ members that I've actually taken the time to sit down and analyze NABJ's current structure. I love some things that we do now but I feel there are several things we can do much better. The journalism world evolves every day and NABJ should evolve just as fast. I named this entry "My Platform: (Part 1)" because I anticipate there will be more editions to the platform.

But here's a recap of my platform thus far:

  • Releasing the workshops before the earlybird registration deadline: The organization has to think more practically when asking members to shell out their hard earned cash for the convention, regional conferences and other special events. I think it is extremely unfair to ask our members to commit to the convention before the workshops are released. In the future, this process must change. The pre-registration deadline shouldn't come before the full slate of workshops are released. If that means moving the announcement of the workshops up or moving the pre-registration deadline back, I'm in favor of either motion. Every decision that NABJ makes from this day forward has to be fair to our members and truthfully make sense.

  • Think Web First: That's the first thing I would tell any student member now and any journalist currently in the business or that was recently laid off. The web is the new way of journalism and you should know as much about the web as possible because it will affect your career and most likely your paycheck. When I say web, what am I talking about? 1) Blogs. Know the popular blog software and know how to use and navigate it. Just about every reporter/editor is asked to blog these days and you should already know what a blog is before your employer asks you to do it. 2) Know how to shoot and edit video. Employers use the word "multimedia journalist" now and that term usually incorporates shooting and editing video. The shooting video part is the easiest of the two but the editing part will make you more valuable to your employer and more marketable if you are searching for work. 3) Know how to take and edit photos. 4) HTML. If you really want to get serious about the web than learning html coding is the way to go. If you know html coding and can create and design websites, you can work for anyone and probably name your price as far as a salary goes. I would strongly recommend any student or journalist seek out opportunities to learn this skill either at their school or within their place of employment or at a local community college or through any service that NABJ offers. I will fully support any program (like the NABJ Media Institute) or training session (like the NABJ Region 1 Conference: Online Tool for Digital Journalists, Part 2").

  • Lowering Convention Costs I've paid my own way to the NABJ convention in 2001, 2002, 2005-2007 and the Unity Convention in 2008. I didn't attend in 2003 or to the UNITY convention in 2004 because I just started new jobs that year. In 2002 while I was still a student member on a small budget, I paid the registration fee for three students at Northeastern University that couldn't afford it. I wanted them there and dug deep into my pocket to make sure they could experience an NABJ convention. I know the sacrifice that NABJ members make every year because I'm one of them and when it comes to cost I'm always mindful of that aspect. I'm not in favor of raising convention prices or membership dues. In regards to the convention model as our source of income, we currently rely on 62 percent of our income from the Convention. We can't go cold turkey and not use the convention as a primary source of income because 1) we can't generate that type of cash the convention brings in right now from any other source and 2) media companies have cut back on what they can/will spend to come to our convention or support our initiatives. 3) We can be better at saving money, spending money and raising money (like the few ideas I proposed below). I would like to lower that percentage to 50 percent and have the "new money" make up the 12 percent difference.

  • Going After New Money: To my knowledge, we don't make any money or very little off our website, which baffles me as I type this response. Our website, in a web-based world, should be a better source of income to NABJ. Should we have advertising on our website? Yeah. What type of ads and where they will be placed...would require some more thought. I'm not sure what we charge for jobs in our NABJobs Online section (and that probably needs a better placement on our website anyways) but maybe offer prospective employers a package deal that we'll feature their job in a prominent spot on the website for a slightly higher fee. Do we have a membership referral service? If not, for every new membership (someone that has never been an NABJ member) that a current nabj member solicits on behalf of NABJ, I say offer a $10 discount to that current member's renewal the following year. This would probably only be done online. As the deputy chair of the membership committee, I've proposed an idea that we create a marketing video something in the 2-3 minute range that can be sent as a DVD or even through e-mail on what it is like to be an NABJ member and attend one of our conventions or regional conferences. I think the video/e-mail should be sent to any college or university that we get a "new student nabj membership." My thinking if there is one...there has to be more. I think the video/e-mail should be sent to any employer that we get a "new professional nabj membership" Once again, my thinking is if there is one...there has to be more.

  • More two-way communication from NABJ to its members: I mentioned in an e-mail to the NABJ forum on Friday, April 10 about a live chat/blog software called "Coveritlive." My paper started using Coveritlive in January 2009 to enhance our sports coverage in the Jersey Shore area. In just three short months, the live chat and live blog sessions are a huge hit with our basketball and lacrosse fans. I tell myself every morning to "Think Web First" and that is how I approach my sports coverage. The live chats and live blogs sessions give readers more access, instant feedback and it shows them that you care about their opinions. It also helps to grow your web visitors and also your web page views. I posted all of this to say there is new technology out there, like Coveritlive, that you can use in your newsrooms to better communicate with your readers/viewers (no matter what speciality you cover) and that NABJ can use in a way to increase interaction with its members. For example, I would love to see a bi-monthly or at least a monthly live chat with the NABJ President moderated by the NABJ Secretary. I would love to see a live chat or even a live blog on how to fill out the NABJ chapter audits and the NABJ chapter applications properly. If visual evidence is needed for the demonstration, an NABJ webinar would probably be more appropriate. If someone has a questions about the NABJ Chapter audits or NABJ chapter applications, they can get an answer on the spot. I'm sure the NABJ staff would appreciate its local professional and student chapters doing the audits and chapter applications, the correct way, the first time. This scenario can happen right now. It takes a minute to create a Coveritlive account and once Coveritlive generates the html coding all you have to do is cut and paste the coding into a blog entry. All the readers/viewers have to do is come to the blog and click on the start button to interact with the moderator and the featured panelist of the day/night. If you missed the chat, you can always catch it on replay at your own convenience. Speaking of blogs, I would love to see the NABJ President's Corner transformed into a blog. Once that is done, you can have live chats on the NABJ President's Corner blog with ease. I would also like to see the NABJ President's Corner blog updated with regularity on what the NABJ President is doing on behalf of NABJ members. A monthly NABJ President's agenda would be nice and of course updates on important deadlines would be better

The decision we make this year will go a long way in shaping NABJ's future. I want to be a part of that future with your help.
